Redesigning an email newsletter for 2 million+ subscribers

Dictionary.com asked me to lead a top-to-bottom refresh of their immensely popular Word of the Day email newsletter.

To kick things off, I organized and conducted a week-long collaborative design studio within the company, involving stakeholders from content, product, sales, design, and engineering. I used this workshop format to develop and refine a product strategy that would assist in the company’s effort to increase and diversify revenue.

For the duration of the project, I facilitated ongoing discussions to ensure all points of view were heard and considered, building consensus and maintain alignment. My leadership in these discussions maintained a holistic approach to the redesign, balancing revenue opportunities with creating a simple and delightful user experience.

As the discussions evolved, I helped guide the creation of product requirements, then created high-fidelity prototypes for the new design. I continued to iterate on the designs based on a steady cadence of feedback. After a final design was agreed upon, I produced detailed specs for the engineering team in aid them while constructing the HTML email templates.

The redesigned Word of the Day newsletter launched in February 2024. Following the launch, I took an active role in analyzing user feedback to identify areas for improvement. Users were quick to suggest that more definition content be included in the body of the email. I responded to this feedback by quickly making design improvements, then helped implement A/B testing to optimize user engagement and satisfaction. The redesign process not only improved the newsletter but also ensured it contributed effectively to our broader business objectives.
